Trailers are the all important middle-man between garage and sea. For that reason, keeping your trailer in good condition is essential.

  • Give it a visual check for: soft or bald tyres, dangling brake cables, damaged lights, broken mudguards, missing break-away cables and general corrosion
  • Carry out a regular full service: strip the hubs and brakes and either visually inspect the bearings or if they are sealed units listen for signs of damage from water ingress.
  • Ensure you have a number plate that matches the car.
  • Strap your PW down with at least two straps
  • Aways have a spare wheel, a jack and wheelbrace
  • Ensure you have the correct classification on your driving licence (licences obtained after January 1997 may require an additional endorsement). New drivers will only beable to drive and tow the following combinations:- Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (cat B) with a 750kg trailer (4.25 tonnes total MAM). Category B vehicles with larger trailers i.e.  > 750kg, provided that the combined MAM does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and the gross MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. To be able to tow combinations outside this ruling requires the passing of an additional test.
  • Remember you are limited to 60mph on a motorway, or less if restrictions apply and you are not allowed to use the third lane.
